The Story Behind the Photo
Embarking on an early morning border crossing into Eswatini in Africa, the excitement was palpable as I eagerly anticipated the bush walk to meet the magnificent rhinos. Curiosity filled the air, and the question of how many rhinos we would encounter crossed in my mind.
Yet, as we set out, barriers emerged – the uncertainty of whether it was safe to exit the car in the presence of elephants, a potential danger that would fully ruin this project.
Upon arriving at the site, the ranger granted the green light to walk down from the car, approaching the rhino under his watchful supervision, allowing for a remarkable proximity of up to 10 meters.
Silence became our ally as we walked carefully, mindful not to disturb the majestic creature and risk its departure. The journey was a delicate dance of discretion and respect.
In the midst of this, as the rhino started to show interest in our presence, the once exhilarating experience turned into a moment of stress. The thin line of safety distance began to blur as the rhino ventured closer and closer.
The climax unfolded as I positioned myself to capture the rhino's expression perfectly, seizing the opportunity for an up-close portrait that reflected the raw beauty and power of this incredible creature.
The result? A profound sense of gratitude enveloped me. The photograph stands as a testament to the unique shot captured, offering a glimpse into the soul of a rhino and the extraordinary chance to interact intimately with this beautiful being in the heart of Eswatini.
